happy holidays!
It’s that time of year again. The days are brighter and thoughts turn to sunnier climes. So you’ve booked the holiday, bought the sun tan lotion and rescued your old suitcase from the attic. Before you start to pack everything including the kitchen sink, bear in mind the effect a heavy and awkward suitcase can have on your spine. So don’t make Michael O’Leary any wealthier with excess baggage charges by following our top travel tips.
· Strategic packing. Do you really need 10 pairs of shoes?
· Use travel size bottles for gels and shampoos, better still buy your toiletries when you get there.
· Try and use a wheelie suitcase and push rather than pull it.
· Be careful when lifting your bag on and off the conveyor belt. Lift using your knees.
· If you use a special pillow at home, remember to bring it with you, so that your neck isn’t disturbed.
· If driving take regular breaks and if you are flying get up and move around, and those lucky enough to be going long haul don’t forget your flight socks.
When you arrive and if the bed is too hard, use a duvet under the bottom sheet. If the bed is really uncomfortable don’t be afraid to complain, remember it’s your back that will suffer!
GRAND OPENING
On Saturday 29/5/10 Clane Chiropractic was officially declared open by local T.D. Aine Brady. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Therapists Nora Mc Namara and Esther Breslin were on hand providing complimentary massage and reflexology treatments for our guests and both Ellen and Richard provided free spinal screening. As all treatments were free on the day visitors were given the opportunity to make a donation to the Little Way Cancer Support Centre. €255 was raised for the Little Way on the day.
Sunscreen – facts and fiction
We all know that feeling the burn is bad when is comes to sun exposure but what is less commonly known is the most effective way to protect our skin from sun damage. So here are some well known (and not so well known) facts and myths surrounding the sun care industry.
sunscreen prevents skin cancer
fiction A study from the Federal Drug Authority (U.S.) indicates that Vit A – retinyl palmitate, an ingredient widely used in sunscreens when applied to the skin in the sun, may speed the development of skin tumours and lesions. It is recommended to avoid sunscreen with retinly palmitate and retinonl on the label.
Sunscreen is the first choice for skin cancer prevention
fiction The International Agency for Research on Cancer recommends clothing, hats and shade as primary barriers to UV radiation and writes that “sunscreens should not be the first choice for skin cancer prevention and should not be used as the sole agent for protection against the sun”.
chemical sunscreens provide the best protection
fiction Many chemical sunscreens contain notorious potential hormone disruptors such as oxybenzone or 4 – MBC. Mineral sunscreens have the best safety profile (zinc and titanium based creams/pastes). If you don’t like mineral screens use sunscreens that contain Tinsorb S and M, or Mexoryl SX or those without benzene.
