Sciatica

Often we hear people say that they suffer from sciatica. In fact sciatica is not a condition but a symptom. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body; it originates near the pelvic bone and runs down the back of the thigh. The nerve is made up of a bundle of nerve roots that originate in the lower spine and pelvic region and terminate s in the lower limb. Pain occurs when this nerve becomes trapped or inflamed.

Symptoms of sciatica often include but are not limited to the following

  • Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot or both
  • Pain originating in the buttock and travelling down the back of the thigh

Possible causes of Sciatica

Nerve compression which can be a result of some of the following reasons:

  • Bulging lumbar disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
  • Spinal tumors (rare)
  • Isthmic  spondylosisthesis

It is estimated that sciatica affects approximately 40% of people at some stage during their lifetime. Sciatica is one of the most common symptoms that patients present with to the clinic.

So how can chiropractic help your sciatica?

Once the root of the problem is identified, treatment is tailored to address the underlying cause using varying techniques such as manipulation, ice, and rehabilitation exercises depending on the patients’ age, size and medical history.
Some people struggle on for many weeks, months and sometimes years with the discomfort of sciatic pain. This need not be the case. The earlier the cause of the discomfort is diagnosed and treated the better. If you have been suffering from any of the symptoms of sciatica give the clinic a call today.
